Parallel Rerun
Mash Up
Parallel Rerun is a fusion of two iconic 1970s albums: Al Jarreau's Look to the Rainbow and Shawn Phillips' Faces. I designed a vinyl cover that reflects the deconstruction of these albums, carefully analyzing their imagery, language, and color palettes to create a cohesive title and artist name. This approach allowed me to blend the essence of both works into a fresh and modern visual interpretation.
In my exploration of typefaces that echoed those used in the original albums, I discovered that Didot closely matched their features. This typeface showcases a high contrast between thick and thin strokes and transitional stress, reflecting a modern typographic style. Complementing the graphics, I also curated vibrant color palettes inspired by the albums to enhance the overall design and create a dynamic visual experience.
The name, “Rainbow Eyes,” emphasizes the color scheme from the original albums, while Parallel Rerun is crafted through a creative rearrangement of letters from the artists’ and album names. The final design incorporates four colors drawn from these palettes, utilizes the Didot typeface, and features overlapping letters.
Instead of emphasizing physical human faces, as both albums do, I focused on typographic elements. The design retains a '70s aesthetic, employing bold colors against a black background to evoke the visual identity of the era. The letters "P" and "R" for Parallel Rerun share similar anatomical characteristics, allowing the "R" to remain consistent while distinct colorways differentiate the "P."
